Gregoresis

The Greek word for watchfulness or vigilance, used in the Gospels to name the posture of a servant who stays alert while the master is away.


Origin and Language

Gregoresis (γρηγόρησις) is the Greek noun derived from the verb gregoreo (γρηγορέω), which means to keep watch, to stay awake, to be vigilant. The verb appears 22 times in the New Testament, most often in the imperative. Gregoreite, the command form, is one of Jesus’ most frequent instructions in his final days before the crucifixion. The noun is rarer but carries the same shape: not a momentary alertness, but a sustained posture of watchfulness held over a long absence.

The root behind gregoreo is egeiro, to wake or to rise. To watch, in this Greek sense, is not to scan or to scrutinize. It is to be the kind of person who has not lain down to sleep at all. Watchfulness is a state, not an act. The porter in Jesus’ parable is not running a checklist. He is awake.

Scriptural Witness

The keystone passage is Mark 13:33-37 (KJV): “Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”

The parable is structured around delegation, not direct labor. The master leaves. Authority is handed out. Each servant has his work. The porter has his watch. The shape of the failure Jesus warns against is not the servants doing nothing while the master is gone. It is the porter sleeping while the work is happening.

Paul reinforces the same posture in 1 Thessalonians 5:6 (KJV): “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” And again in 1 Corinthians 16:13 (KJV): “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” The verb is gregoreo in each case. Sobriety and watchfulness are linked. The one who watches is the one who has not numbed himself to the work being done in his name.

The Pattern Across Traditions

The Stoics named a parallel discipline: prosoche, the practice of attention. Epictetus told his students to attend to what they were doing, even the smallest act, because attention is what turns mere action into the exercise of reason. Marcus Aurelius repeated the lesson in Meditations: “Concentrate every minute like a Roman, and a man, on doing what is in front of you with strict and unaffected dignity.” The Stoic version is less eschatological than the biblical one, but it names the same posture: the worker who has not numbed himself to the present.

Simone Weil, who read both traditions, captured the convergence: “Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.” Watchfulness is a gift. It is what the present moment is owed by the person who has chosen to be in it.

How It Lands in the Age of AI

Async agents run while we sleep. They run while we eat. They run while we are in other meetings. Microsoft made Agent Mode the default in Office Copilot this week, which means the most boring software many readers use every day will start handing off tasks and running them in the background. The new rhythm of work is: describe the outcome, let the agent run, check the result, ship the work.

The biblical warning lands precisely on the middle step. The danger is not that the agent does nothing while we are away. It is that we are away while the agent does the work in our name. The porter who sleeps does not get a pass because his servants were faithful. He is the one whose name is on the door.

The Confidence Score Microsoft attached to Agent Mode is a tool. It is not a substitute for gregoresis. A 96% score tells you the agent has done its part. Whether the work is good is a question that requires your attention, not the agent’s. The score is the bell that wakes the porter. It is not the porter.

How TWO Uses It

TWO writes for operators who are building with AI, which now means delegating to AI. Gregoresis is the editorial frame for that delegation. The work is not how many tasks you can hand off. The work is how well you watch what comes back.

The operator discipline is to treat every agent output as if your name is on it, because it is. The agent does not have an Agent Confidence Score tied to its reputation. You do. The score tells you when to look. It does not tell you that you do not need to.

The second TWO frame: watchfulness is not paranoia. The porter who watches is not the servant who never delegates. He delegated his sleep, not his attention. The operator who refuses to use Agent Mode is not awake. He is hiding. The biblical command is not “do all the work yourself.” It is “watch.”

A Closing Discipline

This week, when an agent returns a piece of work, set a timer. Three minutes minimum. Read the output as if you wrote it. Read the source documents the agent worked from. Then ship or revise.
